APR 11: PROCESS

By Hali Estrada.

When I tell people that I make everything from scratch not many people actually believe me until they see it. Its a long process that starts just with a thought always inspired and heavily influenced by my life as a Skateboarder, and then turning that thought into reality first by drawing by hand (or in Illustrator) the basic idea for graphics or by making a prototype in any fabric I can grab from my studio when it comes to clothing, sometimes I dont even make a pattern and I just start cutting and sewing, after I like what I see and choose a Fabric then I make the pattern and work on the fit. The picture from below is from one of the 5-panel hats, it took me a long time to get a nice fit and I redid the pattern more than 20 times and I sew like 40 hats before the fit was perfect. The hats are a good example of doing something from scratch, I even had to learn how to sew a hat since I never done that before the day I saw that yellow fabric and pictured it as a hat, I bought one yard and took it home, the hardest part was to learn how to attach the visor, but after lots of practice and lots of hours I finally could post them at the store.

I wanted to make a blog entry about the process because I got 2 persons asking me about it today and I wanted to explain a bit about what I do, Im gonna have to make a video one of this days :). Right now Im in the middle of packing tables, machines, screens, inks, patterns, printers, fabrics etc etc to move to a bigger better space, from there it will be a lot of new stuff coming soon, I will keep you guys updated. #CFL.

SEP 10: NO THANKS

By Hali Estrada.

When I was a little kid in the early 80’s whenever we saw a “Made in the USA” label it meant quality, durability and overall good products American manufacturing was the best but somewhere along the way China took over all industries including Skateboarding saturating the market with cheap imported products and little companies couldn’t compete anymore, either they jump on the Chinese “Train” or they went bankrupt. We get emails from China offering us custom Boards at $3, no minimums (its unbelievable), it would be a “no brainer” for any business man, but even though we are a business that needs to make a profit to stay afloat, we are Skateboarders in the first place and we know we cant sacrifice quality for more profit which means less safety for our customers and also for us cause we actually Skate our boards, we know the risks a cheap Board will imply cause we been skateboarding since 1985. We are not a huge corporation looking to exploit the Skate Industry; We’ve been here since before Skateboarding was so popular and we will still be here after corporations finish exploiting our industry. As the Choncordia Skateboards owner I always write long replies to Chinese manufacturers offering us $3 Boards… They say is a no brainer deal, I said not having a brain would be actually accepting their offer jumping on that Train, I kindly reply in a long letter: “Thanks but no thanks”, I personally believe that integrity is more powerful than greed and this is what inspired me to design this new series. This is JESUS OLCESE Pro model from the new “Train Wreck” series and is Available in sizes 7.5, 7.75, 7.8, 8.0, 8.25 and 8.5, 100% designed and made in the USA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ by Skateboarders right here in the heart of California, the way it should be done. Thanks for supporting us πŸ‘Š
